I’m a sociologist, professor and creative writer. You can read this interview where I talk about why I think creative non-fiction can be such an effective way to write about life and loss.

I’m a professor at Middlebury College in Vermont, where I teach about punishment, deviance, drugs and celebrity.

I also teach creative non-fiction at Middlebury and in jails.

Right now, I’m finishing up two projects. The first, “I Will Forget You Forever,” is a collection of fractured stories about caring for my mother, who recently died of dementia. The second, “Granite Valley,” is a novel set in a prison.
